When I first fished at Sterkfontein dam 20 years ago, I was amazed and excited by what this incredible fishery had to offer. What really interests me about fly fishing is that we can outsmart the fish in their own territory! This concept is similarly applied in hunting, the difference being that with fly fishing; we can release the fish again.

In this setting, you can be sure to get a few good smashes on dry fly. The clear water allows for the fisherman to place a dry fly out on the dam and watch how a cruiser yellow swims slowly towards the fly and eats it softly of the surface of the water; heart racing stuff! This is exactly why one should fish with someone who has the passion and energy and understands how to utilize this amazing fishery to its fullest potential! Furthermore, knowing that weather can change in a split second; our years of experience on this fishery has taught us to know where to fish according to wind direction and other weather elements that alter activity under the water.
Fishing is done from our guiding boat, equipped with casting platforms, as well as from the banks of the dam. We pride ourselves in offering an experience of a lifetime; not solely focused on catching these fish but also offering our clients the opportunity to learn about the technical, advanced techniques required on this fishery.

Africa First limits this type of fishing trip to two clients. This ensures that clients will receive all the individual attention needed to enjoy the experience and learn as much as possible from us during this trip.
Africa First partners with Windmill Farm in Bergville as the chosen place of accommodation. This unique spot offers a comfortable and cozy cottage and each guest will have their own room and ensuite bathroom with a shower.
The cottage is fully equipped with a kitchen, breakfast nook, lounge, fire place and patio with braai.
Guests are to be expected at 14h00 on day of arrival and will have an opportunity for a quick afternoon session on Sterkfontein dam to get the dust of the rods! After this session, guests will be accompanied to Windmill Guest farm. The first evening includes a lekker braai and discussions around the game plan to ensure an amazing fly-fishing experience.
We serve breakfast in the morning before heading out to launch the boat. Depending on weather conditions, the most suitable fishing spots will be selected by your experienced guide. Each client will receive a lunch pack for the day and enjoy a fully guided day out on the dam.
